Aqu\u00ed, la geograf\u00eda y el poder se dan la mano. El terreno vibra suavemente bajo todo ello. El r\u00edo Potomac se curva a lo largo del borde de la ciudad como una cinta lanzada casualmente, con sus orillas elev\u00e1ndose lo justo para levantar los monumentos por encima de la llanura de inundaci\u00f3n\u2014quiz\u00e1 para que Lincoln pudiera sentarse con los pies secos, viendo pasar el tr\u00e1fico. Al noroeste, el terreno se eleva en suaves colinas, otorgando una discreta dignidad a Rock Creek Park, una larga columna verde que serpentea por la ciudad como si se hubiera olvidado de ser un bosque en otro lugar. Dentro de este tramo de bosque, los ciervos a\u00fan deambulan junto a diplom\u00e1ticos trotando, ambos ligeramente fuera de lugar. Hacia el sur, donde fluye el r\u00edo Anacostia, el terreno se aplana nuevamente, casi inclin\u00e1ndose ante la c\u00fapula del Capitolio que se eleva no sobre una monta\u00f1a, sino sobre Capitol Hill\u2014una \u201ccolina\u201d solo si se entrecierran los ojos y se cree. Los monumentos que salpican el National Mall parecen marchar en fila, desde el obelisco del Monumento a Washington hasta el tranquilo Reflecting Pool, y hacia Lincoln, siempre pensativo. Y entre ellos, mil senderos se cruzan entre c\u00e9spedes y memoriales donde los turistas pasean, las ardillas conspiran y la historia ocasionalmente tropieza hacia
