Dessin\u00e9es en lignes nettes et en courbes g\u00e9n\u00e9reuses, les rues de la ville s\u2019\u00e9tirent entre de grands boulevards et des parcs spacieux, dont beaucoup sont parsem\u00e9s de fontaines qui \u00e9claboussent sous le soleil sec du Turkm\u00e9nistan. Vue d\u2019en haut \u2014 comme cette carte le montre g\u00e9n\u00e9reusement \u2014 Achgabat ressemble \u00e0 une table soigneusement dress\u00e9e pour un banquet royal, avec ses places publiques et ses monuments somptueux dispos\u00e9s avec soin. On peut presque entendre la ville dire : \u00ab Oui, je suis peut-\u00eatre dans le d\u00e9sert, mais je m\u2019habille pour d\u00eener. \u00bb Les espaces verts, bien que entour\u00e9s par le sable obstin\u00e9, fleurissent \u00e0 travers la ville comme de petits miracles. Le parc de l\u2019Ind\u00e9pendance s\u2019\u00e9tend largement comme un tapis brod\u00e9, tandis que le Monument du Tremblement de terre rappelle discr\u00e8tement aux visiteurs que cette ville s\u2019est relev\u00e9e plus d\u2019une fois de la poussi\u00e8re. L\u2019Arc de la Neutralit\u00e9, une structure assez philosophique surmont\u00e9e d\u2019une figure dor\u00e9e qui tourne avec le soleil, se dresse haut et l\u00e9g\u00e8rement amus\u00e9 \u2014 comme une girouette avec des illusions de grandeur. Au sud, les montagnes du Kopet Dag se profilent en plis subtils, peintes doucement dans le terrain \u2014 un d\u00e9cor naturel qui ajoute du drame sans dire un mot.
