Au c\u0153ur de l\u2019ensemble se trouve la Cit\u00e9 interdite, rectangle imp\u00e9rial qui abrita autrefois empereurs, secrets et quelques intrigues d\u2019eunuques. Autour d\u2019elle, la ville se d\u00e9ploie comme des ondulations \u00e0 la surface d\u2019un \u00e9tang \u2014 les anciens hutongs s\u2019entrelacent avec de larges avenues modernes et, entre les deux, l\u2019histoire continue de changer de chaussures. La ville compte peut-\u00eatre d\u00e9sormais des v\u00e9los, des m\u00e9tros et des boulevards p\u00e9riph\u00e9riques, mais ses fondations vibrent encore au rythme des dynasties. Les espaces verts ponctuent la carte d\u2019une autorit\u00e9 tranquille. Le parc Beihai, avec son lac paisible et ses saules murmurants, ressemble \u00e0 une note de bas de page sortie d\u2019un po\u00e8me classique. Le Temple du Ciel s\u2019\u00e9tend au sud, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 les empereurs priaient autrefois pour de bonnes r\u00e9coltes \u2014 et o\u00f9 aujourd\u2019hui les joggeurs tournent sous son toit rond et bleu, comme pour courir apr\u00e8s la chance. Au-del\u00e0 de la sc\u00e8ne principale, les collines de l\u2019ouest se dressent comme un rideau qui se referme, dissimulant d\u2019anciens temples et des pagodes oubli\u00e9es. Et tout au nord, on aper\u00e7oit la Grande Muraille serpentant \u00e0 travers les collines \u2014 rappel discret que m\u00eame les cartes ont des limites, mais pas les l\u00e9gendes. Ce n\u2019est pas seulement une ville. C\u2019est un dialogue entre la pierre ancienne et l\u2019acier moderne, entre la planification minutieuse et l\u2019\u00e9talement
